Introducing Western Sydney’s finest new talents

PYT presents the Power Up Ensemble in

“Forever-ever?

What if the clock stopped

ticking…”

A hip-hop theatre show

What’s the show about?

“Forever-Ever? What if the clock stopped ticking….” begins at a Year Six Farewell and revolves around twelve characters defined by their friendship groups. We see the cool kids, the shy girl, the naughty kids, the smart kids, the nerds and the loner. On this night these characters will say goodbye to primary school forever. On this night the clock stops ticking for one student and time is thrown out of whack…

Through a series of scenes that warp between the past and the future, we see moments in every character’s life. We are taken on a journey across the time continuum exploring the themes of love, loss, relationships, ageing, seasons, life and death.

Don’t be fooled by the crazy hip-hop moves, the pain in your sides from laughing, the powerful voices singing. It is fun and mighty entertaining. But this show has a level of gravity, of insight and maturity that you might not expect of such a young cast.

Forever-ever?… asks the question, “What if the clock did stop ticking? How would you live your life if tomorrow was your last?“

How did it come about?

The show is entirely self-devised, choreographed and written by the group under the direction of the award-winning hip-hop artist, writer and performer Candy Bowers.

“When we began working together at PYT on Monday nights in May l had no idea what the show was going to be about. After collecting memories and stories from the group and the wider community the theme began to grow and the show took shape. My greatest challenge was trying to fit all their talent into the show- their talent is mind blowing!” PYT Theatre Director, Candy Bowers.

Who are the Power Up Ensemble?

The performers are between 14 and 18 years old and they come from suburbs across the Liverpool, Fairfield and Bankstown Local Government Areas. Armed with passion, commitment and an extraordinary amount of talent, these young performers have devised a show about time and living life to the full.

Representin’ Bankstown in fine form are Fesuiai Fesuiai (18), Kevin Ngo (16), Bridgette Noun (15), William Parera (16), Philip Te Tau (17) and Nikki Waqa (17). Making Fairfield proud are Stacey Champion (16), Mickey Dandachli (16), Kimberly Palelei (17) and Sandra Telo (16). Alexia Kalebic (15) and Justin Jarrett (14) are the cream of the crop from Liverpool. The cast was chosen out of over 200 candidates from the Liverpool, Fairfield and Bankstown area in a PYT youth engagement project called Power Up.

Who are the production team?

Powerhouse Youth Theatre is located in Fairfield and creates innovative and inclusive performing arts opportunities.

Under the guidance of PYT’s General Manager Eleanor Winkler, the ensemble is supported by industry professionals Candy Bowers as Theatre Director, Andy Ko as Associate Director and Lighting Designer, Kim “Busty Beats” Bowers as Production Manager and Sound Designer, Nicki Cervorano as Stage Manager, Arthur Koutoulas as Set Designer, Ben “Bodee” Sinnott as Costume Designer and Diane Wanasawage as Documentation Manager and Publicist.

Many of the crew share similar backgrounds to the cast, with a desire to see the diverse talents of Western Sydney represented on the screen and the stage. They want to see talented young people nurtured and given opportunities that are sometimes lacking in the West.

“Power Up has become one of my greatest experiences… It means a lot just being part of it.” Kimberly Palelei, 17, Power Up Ensemble.

“ I know that I can do so much but I have never been given the chance. The area I live in and my background have held me back but with this project I know it won’t anymore.” Bridgette Noun, 15, Power Up Ensemble.

A level playing field

This production is based on talent though, not charity. The Power Up project was about giving talented people in Fairfield, Liverpool and Bankstown areas the same opportunities that people in more resourced areas get. With eight shows across two weeks, and with students balancing school and often work with their rehearsal commitments, the students are finding out what a real theatre production requires. It is a demanding workload, but the ensemble are proving that they are more than up to it.
